Haut-Rhin has its roots in a rich and diverse culture. The Conseil Général, either through direct action or as a partner of local associations, encourages a lively cultural climate. It promotes reading, protects its historic heritage and its archives.

» Encouraging a lively cultural climate

The aim of the Conseil Général is to promote artistic creation and production, from music to theatre and the plastic arts. It supports a variety of initiatives that are all part of the cultural development of Haut-Rhin.

» Supporting heritage

The Conseil Général provides assistance for museums and for the restoration of historic buildings in Haut-Rhin. It has pooled resources with its opposite numbers in Bas-Rhin to set up an interdepartmental archæological service.

» Promoting reading amongst the public

There are 600,000 books and multimedia resources available to the public. The Conseil Général aims to use the departmental Media Centre as a way of supporting access to knowledge right across all areas of the Department.

» Responding to the need to remember

With more than 23 kms of shelves full of documents, the Departmental Archives contain texts dating from 560 to the present day, including some that demonstrate the continuity of administrative action. The Departmental Centre for Family History can provide genealogical documentation.
